Amarnath Yatra Temporarily Suspended Following IMD Red Warnings and Flash Flood Risks
In response to adverse weather forecasts and high-alert warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the administration has officially halted the annual Amarnath Yatra. The precautionary suspension covers both major mountain tracks—the Pahalgam and Baltal routes—as continuous heavy downpours increase the threat of flash floods, mudslides, and falling stones across fragile Himalayan terrain.
Officials confirmed that no fresh movement of pilgrims is being permitted from base camps, including Nunwan, Chandanwari, and Baltal, nor from the main Yatri Niwas in Jammu. The measure comes after heavy overnight rainfall triggered severe waterlogging and localized disruptions, prompting district authorities to prioritize safety above all else. Over 3.7 lakh devotees had already offered prayers at the holy cave shrine since the commencement of this year's pilgrimage before the weather deteriorated.
Precautionary Halt: Both primary routes remain strictly locked down, with security forces stationed to prevent vehicles from advancing toward vulnerable sectors.
Widespread Impact: Alongside the Amarnath Yatra, pilgrimages to Mata Vaishno Devi and Shiv Khori have also been temporarily put on hold due to identical weather red alerts across the region.
Official Advisory: Authorities have urged all stranded travelers and incoming devotees to stay put at designated lodging centers and rely exclusively on official bulletins before planning further travel.
